Component in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine or gas turbine, which reduces the vibration energy of the exhaust noise. This makes the level of perceived exhaust noise lower and less harmful to the observer. Industrial silencers are often referred to by their attenuation value (transmission loss, insertion loss). For example, common types include 25 dB(A), 35 dB(A) and 45 dB(A)-silencers.
